Three newborn premature infants were seen with an unusual and extensive congenital abnormality involving bowel, urogenital tract, bony pelvis and anterior abdominal wall. The term exstrophy of the cloaca is suggested as a simple term for a complex situation. The embryologic development of this anomaly is discussed.

Posterior Cloaca: A Unique Defect
Journal of Urology, 1998The authors present nine cases of a unique defect in which urethra and vagina are fused together forming a urogenital sinus that deviates posteriorly and opens in the anterior rectal wall at the anus or immediately anterior to it. The rectum is essentially normal or may be minimally anteriorly mislocated.
