Aging and periodontitis increase brain dissemination of oral bacteria

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The microbiome is a dynamic system that changes throughout life. Studies have revealed the relationship between periodontal disease and the oral microbiota; however, the impact of periodontal disease on the expression of senescence markers and on the inflammaging of the oral and systemic microbiome remains unclear.

Detecting Antibiotic Resistance in Strains of Selected Gram‐Negative Bacterial Species Using Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectroscopy successfully identified antibiotic‐resistant Gram‐negative strains. Resistant strains of four bacterial species were discriminated from sensitive ones with 99.1% accuracy using PLS regression. The method allows for rapid, label‐free detection of antibiotic resistance.

Gross anatomical and histomorphological observations on the terminal rectum and the cloaca in the Ostrich Struthio camelus

open access: yes, 2009
In birds, the ability to void urine separate from faeces is unique to ostriches. To further explore this characteristic, the anatomy of the terminal rectum and cloaca of the Ostrich Struthio camelus was studied in four ostriches by gross anatomical ...
