The Use of Clomiphene Citrate

Fertility and Sterility, 1977
Two hundred and fifty-five women received clomiphene citrate during a 10-year period. Fifty-six were treated diagnostically and one hundred and ninty-nine therapeutically for infertility. It is concluded that clomiphene may aid in confirming the diagnosis and establishing a prognosis in patients with primary or secondary amenorrhea.

Abstract Clomiphene citrate (CC) results in ovulatory cycles in about 75–90% of patients with PCOS and is particularly successful in the leaner, oligomenorrheic non-amenorrheic patient with only limited signs of hyperandrogenism. There are specific indications for the use of clomiphene. When used with the simple precautions that have been outlined, it is a safe, relatively inexpensive and convenient method of ovulation induction. Clomiphene certainly deserves its prominent place in the treatment of the infertile woman.

SUMMARY In an attempt to interfere pharmacologically with the feedback action of oestrogen in the ferret, clomiphene citrate was given to anoestrous animals for 10 days, and to oestrous females for 7 or 14 days, in doses ranging from 10 μg to 1000 μg daily.
