Clonidine Overdose in Children
Clinical Toxicology, 1981Three cases of clonidine overdosage are described. The clinical features were typical of those described in the literature. Though all three patients were severely poisoned, treatment was supportive except for intravenous atropine. Other more aggressive treatment regimen are discussed but it is emphasized that these are rarely, if ever, required.

To the Editor.— Warnings have repeatedly been raised regarding the possibility of rebound hypertension following the abrupt cessation of therapy with clonidine hydrochloride. 1-6 While reports have suggested this as a possibility, they have largely been little more than individual case reports with no pretreatment blood pressure observations for ...

AbstractHyperactivity of central noradrenergic neurotransmission has been implicated in the pathophysiology of mania. This theory suggests that clonidine, an antihypertensive medication that decreases the activity of central noradrenergic neurons by presynaptic inhibitory effect, has antimanic properties. We administered clonidine orally in a dosage of

Excretion of an Analogon of Clonidine Compared with Clonidine in Rats
1978An analogon of clonidine substituted in the benzene ring with bromide instead of chloride was given to female rats in a dose which has no effect on the blood pressure. The substance was randomly tritiated (specific activity 3.76 mCi/mg; NEN). The radioactive purity amounted to 96–97%.

The incidence of clonidine overdose is increasing, yet there is a paucity of new information regarding treatment options for clonidine toxicity. Reported treatment approaches vary widely, demonstrating the lack of science on which current treatment is based. Available research needs to be reassessed.
