Come from away: Reconstructing a long‐range migratory flight of spruce budworm moths to Newfoundland, Canada Venues de loin : reconstitution d'un vol migratoire de longue distance de tordeuses des bourgeons de l'épinette vers Terre‐Neuve, au Canada

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, Page 41-58, February 2026.
Lagrangian atmospheric models were used in conjunction with ecophysiological factors to reconstruct the path and meteorological conditions of a long‐range migration flight of spruce budworm moths to Newfoundland, Canada. Moths travelled under high winds and warm temperatures that favoured their migratory flight until encountering cooler temperatures ...

Sex-specific spatio-temporal variability in reproductive success promotes the evolution of sex-biased dispersal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
: Inbreeding depression, asymmetries in costs or benefits of dispersal, and the mating system have been identified as potential factors underlying the evolution of sex-biased dispersal. We use individual-based simulations to explore how the mating system

Tonal Surprisal and Contextual Shifts Evoke Distinct Pupil Dilation During Dynamic Sound Sequences

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Using pupil dilation and Bayesian modeling, we show that listeners track both momentary unexpectedness and the reliability of auditory contexts. Model‐based analyses reveal that tone‐by‐tone surprisal and contextual precision jointly shape arousal across dynamic auditory environments.

SCADDA: Spatiotemporal Cluster Analysis With Density‐Based Distance Augmentation and Its Application to Fire Carbon Emissions

open access: yesGeographical Analysis, Volume 58, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Spatiotemporal clustering occupies an established role in various fields dealing with geospatial analysis, spanning from healthcare analysis to environmental science. One major challenge is application in which cluster assignments are dependent on local densities, meaning that higher‐density areas should be treated more strictly for spatial ...

Depletion Estimation, Stock–Recruitment Relationships, and Interpretation of Biomass Reference Points

open access: yesFishes
Stock depletion level is an important concept in the assessment and management of exploited fish stocks because it is often used in conjunction with reference points to infer stock status.

Robust estimates of a high Ne/N ratio in a top marine predator, southern bluefin tuna

open access: yesScience Advances, 2018
Genetic and demographic analyses indicate good conservation news for southern bluefin tuna. Genetic studies of several marine species with high fecundity have produced “tiny” estimates (≤10−3) of the ratio of effective population size (Ne) to adult ...

DnaDot - fixing ecology and evolution’s blind spot, population size

open access: yesEcological Indicators
To understand and manage any ecosystem, one of the most critical indicators is census population size (‘Nc’) for each component species. This is why the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) stipulates that it is ideal to know census size

USGS/NOAA Workshop on Mycobacteriosis in Striped Bass, May 7-10, 2006, Annapolis, Maryland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
As a Federal trust species, the well-being of the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) population along the Eastern Seaboard is of major concern to resource users. Striped bass are an extremely valuable commercial and recreational resource.

“Those people must have loved her very dearly”: Interracial Adoption and Radical Love in Antislavery Children’s Literature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This essay reads a little-studied, probably white-authored abolitionist children’s novel in which white parents adopt a black child and love her as much as they would a white child.
