Comparison of open-closed divertor geometries in ASDEX

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1990
Abstract Divertor impurity retention and exhaust capability were studied at ASDEX for two different divertor geometries. In one of these, bypass openings allow neutral gas exchange between divertor and main chamber (open divertor), in the other the bypasses are closed (closed divertor).

The behavior and control of injected impurity in the closed divertor of HL-2A

Physica Scripta, 2023
Abstract Excessive heat load on the divertor target has been identified as a major challenge for present and future tokamaks. Divertor detachment achieved by injecting radiating impurity is an effective method to reduce heat load onto the divertor target surface. However, extremely serious effects on the core plasma could be given by the

Study of a closed divertor with strong gas puffing on JFT-2M

Nuclear Fusion, 1999
In order to improve the particle control capability of the divertor and to demonstrate the possibility of a dense and cold divertor with high confinement plasmas, a closed divertor study has been carried out on the JFT-2M tokamak. When a strong gas puff is applied into the divertor chamber, a baffling effect is revealed by enhanced radiation ...

Optimization of Closed Divertor Configuration for Effective Particle Control in LHD Plasmas

Contributions To Plasma Physics, 2008
AbstractNeutral particles in the LHD plasma periphery are investigated by three‐dimensional neutral particle transport simulation. The simulation predicts significant change of the density profile of neutral particles depending on magnetic configurations (radial position of the magnetic axis Rax ).

The role of divertor pumping in plasma detachment and particle exhaust in a closed divertor

Nuclear Fusion, 2020
Abstract The impact of pumping on divertor power dissipation and particle exhaust in a closed divertor with flat target configuration is examined using SOLPS modeling. A closed divertor can increase neutral pressure and enhance radiative dissipation; accordingly it has been proposed as a direction for the design of advanced divertors to ...

Closed divertor operation in ASDEX Upgrade and JET

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 1999
Operation in ASDEX Upgrade and JET with different divertor geometries is compared with emphasis upon energy and particle exhaust and the impact of the divertor on core plasma performance. Closing the divertor increases the ratio of the neutral flux density in the divertor to that in the main chamber and facilitates improved pumping.

Measured plasma parameters in TdeV's closed poloidal divertors

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1995
Abstract Measurements in TdeV in the double null configuration show strong asymmetries between the upper and lower divertors. The divertor to which the ion ∇ B drift is directed has a higher density, which varies little with the central line-average density.

Biasing of closed double null poloidal divertor plates on TdeV

Physics Letters A, 1992
Abstract Bias voltages applied to the divertor plates in TdeV (Tokamak de Varennes) permit fine control of several main plasma parameters, including the poloidal rotation velocity near the separatrix, microturbulence, the sawtooth period and the heat pulse propagation speed.

Periodical Motion of Ionized Front in a Closed Divertor Simulator

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2003
The dynamics of plasma contacting with the enormous neutral particles has been investigated experimentally by using a closed‐divertor simulator. It has been observed that the ionized front periodically moves in and out of the closed divertor region, as the neutral gas is injected sufficient amount for achieving plasma detachment in the divertor region.
