Purpose of review The last 25 years have seen considerable development in modes of closed-loop ventilation and there are now several of them commercially available. They not only offer potential benefits for the individual patient, but may also improve the organization within the intensive care unit (ICU).

Closed-loop systems are able to make their own decisions and to try to reach and maintain a preset target. As a result, they might help the anaesthetist to optimise the titration of drug administration without any overshoot, controlling physiological functions and guiding monitoring variables.

The closed loop hypothesis of Berezovsky and Trifonov implicates the closure of loops of length 25-35 through hydrophobic interactions at the 'locks' as a key event in protein folding. The hypothesis is supported by published analyses of nine major superfolds.

Closing the Loop in Webpage Understanding
IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, 2008Little work has been done towards an integrated statistical model for understanding webpage structures and processing natural language sentences within the HTML elements. This paper proposed a novel framework called WebNLP which enables bidirectional integration of page structure understanding and text understanding in an iterative manner.

Trauma audit — closing the loop
Injury, 1994The philosophy of medical audit and methods of data collection and statistical analysis have been extensively reviewed but less has been written about the effect of audit on medical practice. The measurement of performance is only valuable if it identifies areas of concern and stimulates appropriate change.

Data from histological tracing studies in non-human primate strongly support the view that the cerebellar system is organized into distinct, motor and non-motor, parallel closed-loop circuits interconnecting the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex. Functional imaging data in human seem to confirm this specific network organization in human, and to ...
