A single residue affects the dynamics and shape of a tetrameric GH43 β‐1,4‐d‐xylosidase from Levilactobacillus brevis DSM1269

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 34, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Lignocellulosic materials (e.g., straw and bran) are gaining interest as feedstocks for the manufacture of higher value products, recognizing xylooligosaccharides (XOS) as interesting prebiotic compounds, and putting enzymes converting xylooligosaccharides into focus.

Nitrogen Fixation Potential in Bathypelagic Sediment of the Ice‐Covered Arctic Ocean Revealed Through Long‐Term Stable Isotope Incubations

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 5, October 2025.
We sampled five locations of deep‐sea surface sediments in the central ice‐covered Arctic Ocean and documented diazotroph communities and nitrogen fixation potential. The findings considerably extend the known biome of marine nitrogen fixation and raise the question of the significance of low but potentially widespread nitrogen fixation in deep‐sea ...

Bacterial 16S Ribosomal Gene Fingerprints as a Tool to Diagnose and Mitigate Fish Larvae Gut Dysbiosis

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 5, October 2025.
This study profiles the gut microbiota of poor‐ and good‐quality seabream and seabass larvae across different sites using 16S rRNA sequencing. Several bacterial markers associated with larval quality were identified and used to develop a dysbiosis index. Gut bacterial correlation networks revealed potential bacteria–bacteria interactions.
