Spider Lightning Characterization: Integrating Optical, NLDN, and GLM Detection

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2023
Here, we investigate the characteristics of spider lightning analyzing individual lightning flashes as well as the overall electric storm system. From July to November 2022, optical camera systems captured the visually spectacular spider lightning in ...

Lightning electromagnetic emission location using arrival time differencing (LEELA): An introduction to the Met Office's next generation Very Low Frequency lightning location system

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This paper describes the Met Office's new lightning location system LEELA. A brief overview of the upgraded hardware and geolocation algorithms is given. LEELA has improved lightning detection capabilities, especially at night. When comparing LEELA to the previous ATDnet system against ground truths LEELA has 100% storm detection efficiency within 5 km

Occurrence of positive and negative polarity cloud-to-ground lightning flashes: Case study of CGR4 and GPATS data for Brisbane, Australia

open access: yes, 2011
The occurrences of positive and negative polarity cloud-to-ground lightning flashes were detected by ground-based lightning flash counters CGR4 in Brisbane,Australia.

Characterizing Pulse Attenuation of Intra-Cloud and Cloud-to-Ground Lightning with E-Field Signal Measured at Multiple Stations

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
In this paper, we analyze the waveform data of nearly 200,000 intra-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning discharges detected by the Jianghuai Area Sferic Array on 26–29 August 2019 to investigate the propagation features of lightning ...

Object‐based deep learning for probabilistic convective‐core nowcasting from satellite data

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Convective cores detected from Meteosat infrared imagery are represented as compact physical objects to generate probabilistic nowcasts up to 6 h ahead. A spatio‐temporal transformer models interactions among evolving core populations and produces gridded probability forecasts across the western Sahel.

Unusual vertical oscillations of a radiosonde

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
In summer 2023 in southern England, several unusual balloon launches were observed which descended for a few minutes before resuming ascent. This unusual vertical oscillation was repeated several times in a ‘roller‐coaster’‐like pattern. This article discusses the behaviour of the balloons.

Comparison of high‐speed optical observations of a lightning flash from space and the ground [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
We analyze a nighttime negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash in Colombia observed from the ground with a high‐speed camera at 5000 images per second, and from space by the Atmosphere‐Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) on the International Space Station

A Survey and Perspectives on Mathematical Models for Quantitative Precipitation Estimation Using Lightning

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, 2017
Lightning is one of the most spectacular phenomena in nature. It is produced when there is a breakdown in the resistance in the electric field between the ground and an electrically charged cloud.

Seasonal and Regional Distribution of Lightning Fraction Over Indian Subcontinent

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2023
Four years of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology lightning location network lightning observation data are used to determine the seasonal and spatial (over different geographical locations) distribution of the ratio of intra‐cloud (IC) lightning to

How weather got its words: a history of meteorological English – Part 2: the scientific age and beyond

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
The English language is a gargantuan, gluttonous beast. It has become extraordinary in its powers of assimilation – such that we rarely consider the origins of the words we use. In this paper, we will shed light on these origins, including the Pontic–Caspian steppe, the British Empire and, of course, a TV show.
