The Gattini cameras for optical sky brightness measurements at Dome C, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The Gattini cameras are two site testing instruments for the measurement of optical sky brightness, large area cloud cover and auroral detection of the night sky above the high altitude Dome C site in Antarctica.

Arresting Microphase Separation Encodes Material Mechanics by Sculpting Microarchitectures and Local Polymer Enrichment

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Microarchitecture sculpting via phase separation programs hydrogel mechanics by creating globular, inverse globular, and spinodal structures. Spinodal architectures deliver superior toughness and energy dissipation, while ionic modulation through single polymer phase separation offers a simple, scalable route to tune mechanical properties ...

Remotely Sensed High-Resolution Global Cloud Dynamics for Predicting Ecosystem and Biodiversity Distributions. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2016
Cloud cover can influence numerous important ecological processes, including reproduction, growth, survival, and behavior, yet our assessment of its importance at the appropriate spatial scales has remained remarkably limited.

Hydrogel Thermostat Inspired by Photoprotective Foliage Using Latent and Radiative Heat Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Guided by Populus alba foliage, this hydrogel latent‐radiative thermostat (LRT) actively balances latent and radiative heat fluxes. An LRT switches solar reflectance, maintains high mid‐IR emissivity, and reversibly evaporates/regenerates water, while titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles toughen the film.

Switching cloud cover and dynamical regimes from open to closed Benard cells in response to the suppression of precipitation by aerosols [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2006
The dynamic structure of the weakly sheared atmospheric marine boundary layer (MBL) supports three distinct states of cloud cover, which are associated with the concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) aerosols in the MBL: (i) CCN rich MBL with ...

Mistletoe‐ and Mussel‐Inspired Fabrication of Hierarchically Structured Protein‐Cellulose Scaffolds From Biomolecular Condensates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Merging materials processing tricks inspired by mussel and mistletoe fiber fabrication, solutions of cationic mussel byssus proteins were mixed with modified anionic nanocrystalline cellulose, producing distinctive core‐shell condensates. Simple processing of condensate suspensions using freeze‐drying produced hierarchically structured porous protein ...
