General cloud cover modifier for clear sky solar radiation models

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Worldwide lack of comprehensive measured solar radiation resource data for solar system design is well known. Several simple clear sky solar radiation models for computing hourly direct, diffuse and global hemispherical solar radiation have been developed over the past 25 years.

Comparison of model‐generated and satellite‐derived cloud cover and radiation budget

Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1988
Using a data set including large‐scale fields and collocated satellite observations (the NEPHOS file), we test the validity of the approach proposed for validating general circulation model type cloud schemes with the future International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) and First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) data sets.

Clouds and relative humidity in climate models; or what really regulates cloud cover?

1995
The response and impact of clouds remains one of the largest outstanding questions in GCMs. Clouds are not homogeneous, though they are treated as such in the models. When averaged over areas typically used as numerical grid elements by GCMs, observations suggest that there are some clouds at all relative humidities.

Irradiance separation model parameter estimation from historical cloud cover statistical properties

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews
Irradiance separation models allow the decomposition of Global Horizontal Irradiance into Diffuse Horizontal and Direct Normal Irradiances. These models need fitting to the irradiance characteristics of the location of interest using locally measured ground data.

The representation of cloud cover in atmospheric general circulation models

2001
This dissertation describes various aspects of improvements made in the representation of clouds in the global forecast model of the European Centre of Medium-Range Weather Fore- casts (ECMWF). Cloud parametrization has long been identified as one of the most crucial and uncertain aspects in General Circulation Models (GCMs) of the atmosphere, which ...

Modeling the Variation of Cloud Cover with View Angle Using Space Shuttle Cloud Imagery

1990
Abstract : This report documents the development of numerous elementary cloud cover models and evaluates the capability of each comparison with actual data. The data are measurements of apparent cloud cover as a function of view angle obtained from space shuttle cloud photographs.

CONSTRUCTING A CLOUD-COVER MODEL USING HIGH-RESOLUTION THERMAL IMAGERY FROM SPACE

Mapping Sciences and Remote Sensing, 2000
An algorithm for the assimilation of satellite high-resolution spectrometric measurements (AVHRR/NOAA radiometer) and medium-resolution spectrometric measurements (HIRS/NOAA) for the purpose of remotely sensing the meteorological parameters of the “atmosphere + surface” system is discussed.

Satellite-based evaluation of cloud cover through three generations of global atmosphere models

2023
Cloud cover products from multiple satellite projects are long enough to provide a robust evaluation of climate models. Using global atmosphere models forced by observed sea-surface temperature and employing satellite simulator software, three generations of the Community Atmosphere Model are evaluated.
