Effects of model resolution and parameterizations on the simulations of clouds, precipitation, and their interactions with aerosols [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2018
This study investigates the roles played by model resolution and microphysics parameterizations in the well-known uncertainties or errors in simulations of clouds, precipitation, and their interactions with aerosols by the numerical weather prediction ...

On the link between ocean biota emissions, aerosol, and maritime clouds: Airborne, ground, and satellite measurements off the coast of California [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Surface, airborne, and satellite measurements over the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of California during the period between 2005 and 2007 are used to explore the relationship between ocean chlorophyll a, aerosol, and marine clouds.

Performance Evaluation of the MPAS Model in Simulating Southeast Asian Rainfall Characteristics

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study evaluates the performance of the Model for Prediction Across Scales–Atmosphere (MPAS) in reproducing key rainfall characteristics over Southeast Asia (SEA) during 2000–2020, using the MSWEP dataset as reference. MPAS realistically captures the observed meridional rainfall gradient, with higher rainfall in the south and lower in the north, as

Enhancements in Cloud Condensation Nuclei Activity From Turbulent Fluctuations in Supersaturation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
The effect of aerosols on the properties of clouds is a large source of uncertainty in predictions of weather and climate. These aerosol‐cloud interactions depend critically on the ability of aerosol particles to form cloud droplets.

Three Generations of NARCliM: Evaluation of Precipitation, Temperature and Their Extremes Over the CORDEX Australasia Domain

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The NSW and Australian Regional Climate Modelling Version 2.0 (NARCliM2.0) builds on NARCliM1.0 and 1.5 to deliver improved regional climate simulations. This study provides the first comprehensive evaluation of NARCliM2.0 against its predecessors, assessing individual model skill in reproducing mean and extreme climate.

JAXA Level 2 cloud and precipitation microphysics retrievals based on EarthCARE radar, lidar, and imager: the CPR_CLP, AC_CLP, and ACM_CLP products [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques
This study introduces the primary products and features of active-sensor-based Level 2 cloud microphysics products of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA; i.e., the cloud radar standalone cloud product (CPR_CLP), the radar–lidar synergy cloud

Application of a new scheme of cloud base droplet nucleation in a spectral (bin) microphysics cloud model: sensitivity to aerosol size distribution [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2016
A new scheme of droplet nucleation at cloud base is implemented into the Hebrew University Cloud Model (HUCM) with spectral (bin) microphysics. In this scheme, supersaturation maximum Smax near cloud base is calculated using theoretical results ...

Aggregate Hazes in Exoplanet Atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Photochemical hazes have been frequently used to interpret exoplanet transmission spectra that show an upward slope towards shorter wavelengths and weak molecular features.

Machine‐learning approaches for characterizing the raindrop size distributions in Western Pacific tropical cyclones

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Long‐term disdrometer observations are utilized to derive Z–R relationships for ‐the Western Pacific tropical cyclones. A hybrid moment‐based approach is employed to determine the interrelationships among pairs of gamma distribution parameters. Enhanced estimates of rainfall rate and slope parameter are obtained using machine‐learning techniques ...

Impact of small‐scale gravity waves on tracer transport

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We extend a gravity wave (GW) parametrization to calculate the tracer transport due to the GW–Stokes drift and next‐order effects, where the approach is validated by comparing coarse‐resolution simulations with parametrized GWs to high‐resolution, wave‐resolving reference simulations.
