Cloud‐resolving model simulations of multiply‐banded frontal clouds

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2005
AbstractAn idealized two‐dimensional cloud‐resolving model is used to investigate the formation and temporal evolution of multiply‐banded clouds in frontal zones. Radar observations often show both upright and slantwise convection in the circulations associated with such bands.

Cloud-Resolving Modeling of Precipitation

2011
Precipitation has important impacts on people’s daily life and torrential precipitation could bring tremendous losses in economy and cause fatalities. Thus, precipitation always is one of the top priorities in operational forecast and scientific research. Precipitation is a result of convective development under a favorable environment.

Future Perspective of Cloud-Resolving Modeling

2016
In this chapter, a set of cloud microphysical schemes are simplified based on the grid-scale data from the simulation of tropical rainfall event during TOGA COARE. The basic concept of cloud-resolving convection parameterization and its application to general circulation model simulations are discussed.

Comparisons of GCM cloud cover parameterizations with cloud-resolving model explicit simulations

Science China Earth Sciences, 2015
Three kinds of the widely-used cloudiness parameterizations are compared with data produced from the cloud-resolving model (CRM) simulations of the tropical cloud system. The investigated schemes include those based on relative humidity (RH), the semi-empirical scheme using cloud condensate as a predictor, and the statistical scheme based on ...

Cloud seeding impact on precipitation as revealed by cloud-resolving mesoscale model

Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 2006
A cloud-resolving mesoscale model has been used to investigate the effects of cloud seeding by silver-iodide (AgI) if the seeding is performed at cold part of a long-lasting convective cloud. Our motivation for this research was to answer the principle question: where, when and what amount of silver-iodide lead to optimum effects of seeding: rain ...

Cirrus Cloud Properties from a Cloud-Resolving Model Simulation Compared to Cloud Radar Observations

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2003
Abstract Cloud radar data collected at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program's Southern Great Plains site were used to evaluate the properties of cirrus clouds that occurred in a cloud-resolving model (CRM) simulation of the 29-day summer 1997 intensive observation period (IOP).

Developping a new cloud resolving model for Titan’s methane clouds

Titan is the largest moon of Saturn, with a radius around 2575 km, and it is surrounded by a thick atmosphere composed of nitrogen, methane, and many other organic compounds. The temperature and pressure profiles on Titan enable the condensation of several gases in the atmosphere, including methane, forming clouds.

Improving the representation of turbulence and clouds in cloud resolving models and general circulation models

2014
Over the past few years a new type of general circulation model (GCM) has emerged that is known as the multiscale modeling framework (MMF). The Colorado State University (CSU) MMF represents a coupling between the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) GCM and the System of Atmospheric Modeling (SAM) cloud resolving model (CRM).
