Decentralized autonomous planning of cluster reconfiguration for fractionated spacecraft

Acta Astronautica, 2016
Abstract Autonomous cluster operation such as cluster reconfiguration is one of the enabling technologies for fractionated spacecraft. By virtue of the multi-agent system theory, this paper presents an organizational architecture for fractionated spacecraft, which not only enables autonomous cluster operations but also facilitates its non-traditional

Cluster flight orbit design method for fractionated spacecraft

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose an intuitive and effective cluster flight orbit design method for fractionated spacecraft.Design/methodology/approachBased on the concept of fractionated spacecraft, orbit design requirements for cluster flight in the case of fractionated spacecraft are proposed, and categorized into three requirements ...

Feasibility checks and control laws for reconfigurations of spacecraft clusters

2012 American Control Conference (ACC), 2012
A multi-spacecraft system consists of wirelessly-connected spacecraft that share resources in Earth orbit or deep space. One of the enabling technologies of such a fractionated space architecture is cluster flight, which provides the cluster with the capability to perform a cluster scatter and regather maneuvers to rapidly evade debris-like threats or ...

Cluster flight control for fractionated spacecraft on an elliptic orbit

Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, 2016
This paper deals with the stabilization of cluster flight on an elliptic reference orbit by the Hamiltonian structure-preserving control using the relative position measurement only. The linearized Melton’s relative equation is utilized to derive the controller and then the full nonlinear relative dynamics are employed to numerically evaluate the ...

Initial results of a survey of equatorial noise emissions observed by the Cluster spacecraft

Planetary and Space Science, 2005
Abstract Initial results of a survey of equatorial noise emissions are presented. These plasma wave emissions are observed in the inner magnetosphere close to the geomagnetic equator at frequencies below the local lower hybrid frequency. We use the data recorded by the four Cluster spacecraft during the first 24 months of measurements.

Magnetosheath Plasma Turbulence and Its Spatiotemporal Evolution as Observed by the Cluster Spacecraft

Physical Review Letters, 2008
We study the plasma turbulence, at scales larger than the ion inertial length scale, downstream of a quasiparallel bow shock using Cluster multispacecraft measurements. We show that turbulence is intermittent and well described by the extended structure function model, which takes into account the spatial inhomogeneity of the cascade rate.

Spacecraft Recognition in Co-Located Satellites Cluster Through Optical Measures

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 2017
The optical orbit determination is one of the most important ways for noncooperative object tracking. One of the main problems with noncooperative object tracking is its recognition through different nights. In this study, the conditions that ensure the recognition of a geostationary satellite inside a cluster were assessed through a hard real case ...

Explicit Dipole Trajectory Solution for Electromagnetically Controlled Spacecraft Clusters

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2010
Satellite formation flight is a much-anticipated technology for future space-science missions, such as high-resolution space-based telescopes. A potentially enabling technology under development allows clusters of spacecraft to maneuver without the use of propellant, instead using electromagnetic control of the relative degrees of freedom within the ...

A survey of autonomous cooperation of modules' cluster operations for fractionated spacecraft

International Journal of Space Science and Engineering, 2013
Autonomous cooperation is recognised as the key technology to enable modules’ cluster operations of fractionated spacecraft. This paper presents a thorough survey of the technologies that facilitate the desired autonomous cooperation of fractionated spacecraft.

CLUSTER spacecraft observation of a thin current sheet at the Earth’s magnetopause

Advances in Space Research, 2006
Abstract On March 30, 2002 within 17 min the four CLUSTER spacecraft crossed the Earth’s high-latitude magnetopause three times. We found that all three magnetopause current sheets are nearly co-planar on the scales of the CLUSTER spacecraft separation.
