The current development in manufacturing processes trend to flexible automation combined with higher accuracy. This requires flexible, automated and adequately accurate measuring instruments for inspection, toe. Today's CNC-co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are capable, first and foremost, of fulfilling these requirements.

To calculate a CMM uncertainties we have studied the CMM acquisition chain. We propose to model the CMM. The initialisation procedure is very important for the control of the measurement quality. We show the main operations required for a use of CMM. This work is the roots of our study on CMM uncertainties.

A Computer Aided Inspection Planning (CAIP) system is a process planner able to automatically plan all the operations related to dimensional inspection of mechanical parts by a co-ordinate measuring machine. In this paper we discuss a interesting CAIP aspect: the probe path generation.
