A Performance‐Based Earthquake Fatality Modeling Framework Using Collapse Volume Ratios

open access: yesEarthquake Spectra, Volume 42, Issue 2, May 2026.
Conventional earthquake fatality models are commonly implemented using a binary representation of building collapse, an assumption that overlooks severe failure modes and systematically underestimates fatalities. To address this limitation, this study advances the collapse volume ratio—a continuous metric quantifying the reduction of survivable space ...

Solving for Blameless and Optimal Control Under Prioritized Safety Constraints

open access: yesOptimal Control Applications and Methods, Volume 47, Issue 3, Page 748-762, May/June 2026.
Summary of the proposed method for solving for blameless and optimal control sequences. ABSTRACT In many safety‐critical optimal control problems, users may request multiple safety constraints that are jointly infeasible due to external factors such as subsystem failures, unexpected disturbances, or fuel limitations.

The Influence of CMMI on Establishing an Architecting Process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A large IT company is creating a generic architecting process. Since the company has set an objective to achieve Maturity Level 3 of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), the process needs to comply with the relevant requirements set by the CMMI. This paper presents the elicitation of such requirements, and the resulting set of requirements.

Extending plant water‐use strategies to flowers: Evidence from trait correlations across plant organs

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 1491-1503, May 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Despite the importance of flowers to plant fitness, it remains unclear whether flowers display ecophysiological strategies and how floral traits are associated with leaf economic traits.

Robust and Reversible Thermofluorescence in Solvent‐Free Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 36, Issue 29, 9 April 2026.
Thermofluorescent polymer composites with high‐contrast optical outputs are prepared by solvent‐free blending of indenoquinacridone dye into a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix. The temperature‐dependent fluorescence originates from aggregation–dissociation of the dye molecules, regulated by competing hydrogen bonds from the polymer matrix.
