Experimental Study of Co-Flow Jet Airfoil Performance Enhancement Using Discreet Jets
49th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2011This paper demonstrates a new performance enhancement methodology for Co-Flow Jet (CFJ) airfoils using discrete injection jets. This research is motivated by the hypothesis that a discrete CFJ (DCFJ) airfoil will generate both streamwise and spanwise vortex structures to achieve more effective turbulent mixing than an open slot CFJ airfoil. Aerodynamic

Experimental Studies on Co-flowing Subsonic and Sonic Jets
Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, 2011Effect of an annular co-flow jet on the center jet at subsonic, correctly expanded and underexpanded sonic conditions was studied experimentally. It is found that the co-flow retards the mixing of the primary jet, leading to potential core elongation. The characteristic decay of the jet is also retarded in the presence of co-flow.

Digital Simulation of Dominant Eddies of A Co-Flowing Jet
2009This paper described a method for virtual construction of turbulent jet flow field from a limited set of experimental data. The objective is for jet visualization enhancement in near-field plume models. The method is based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), which is an efficient tool to capture the turbulent field based on principal ...

Prediction of Jets and Flames in Co-Flowing Streams
ASME 1991 Computers in Engineering Conference: Volume 1 — Artificial Intelligence; Expert Systems; CAD/CAM/CAE; Computational Fluid/Thermal Engineering, 1991Abstract The theoretical computation of jets and flames in co-flowing streams is of considerable interest in aerothermochemistry. Axisymmetric flowfields are considered with time-mean velocity, temperature and species concentrations (three components — fuel, oxygen, and products) being predicted via a version of the GENMIX computer code.

Aerodynamic flow vectoring of 2-D, co-flowing jets
35th Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 1997A methodology for the aerodynamic thrust vectoring of a two-dimensional jet in a co-flowing stream is described. The sole control input to stimulate thrust vectoring is suction applied at the base region of blunt-faced lips forming the exit of the jet. Once the suction volume flux applied at the jet lips exceeds a critical value needed to suppress any ...

Cavitation inception in quiescent and co-flow nozzle jets
Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2010The prediction and scaling of cavitation inception in jets remains a difficult task. This paper presents findings of an experimental investigation to study the cavitation inception of quiescent and co-flow submerged jets. Experimental data were collected in the ARL/PSU 12-inch and 48-inch Diameter Water Tunnels.

Mixing Mechanism of a Discrete Co-Flow Jet Airfoil
41st AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2011The flow mechanism leading to the enhanced performance of a discrete co-flow jet (dCFJ) airfoil is investigated. Flow visualization and DPIV are used to analyze the difference between the flow along discrete jets and over the tabs used for discretization of the slot jet.

Lifted flames on fuel jets in co-flowing air
Progress in Energy and Combustion Science, 2009Abstract The three principal theories for the stabilization of lifted flames on turbulent jets of fuel are reviewed in the light of the most recent flame imaging experiments in the literature. Most of these experiments have been conducted with a small co-flow of air, but the observations are relevant to lift-off with higher ratios of co-flowing air ...
