Multitrophic alpha and beta diversity of lake plankton across Canada

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Anthropogenic environmental changes impact freshwater biodiversity globally. While biodiversity assessments in freshwater environments have traditionally focused on individual groups of organisms or trophic levels, considering patterns of ‘multitrophic biodiversity' across the food web provides a more comprehensive view of anthropogenic impacts and ...

Evaluation of CO2 storage effected by geological parameters of brine layer

open access: yesMeitan xuebao
In the practice of carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage, the storage of CO2 in salt water layer has gradually become an effective way to deal with global warming, achieving the goal of net zero in 2050 and reducing CO2 emissions due to its ...

Assessing relational values of sacred landscapes through text mining of folktales: Insights from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Assessing relational values of nature through its cultural and spiritual significance is crucial for effective nature conservation. Folktales offer insights into traditional relationships between people and nature, and text mining is a powerful tool for extracting information from textual datasets.

Principal Concepts of CO2 Geological Storage: from Rock Sampling to Coupled Time-Lapse Petrophysical and Seismic Numerical Modelling. Case Study of Prospective Onshore and Offshore Structures in Latvia

open access: yes
In this study we (1) selected and sampled two onshore and two offshore geological structures within the Cambrian saline aquifer suitable for CO2 geological storage in the Latvian area of the Baltic Region, (2) determined reservoir quality of the Cambrian

Long-Term Risks and Short-Term Regulations: Modeling the Transition from Enhanced Oil Recovery to Geologic Carbon Sequestration [PDF]

open access: yes
Recent policy debates suggest that geologic carbon sequestration (GS) likely will play an important role in a carbon-constrained future. As GS evolves from the analogous technologies and practices of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations to a long-term,

Simulating Arctic Greening: Microbial Responses in Thawing Yedoma Permafrost

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Arctic permafrost soils and sediments store vast amounts of organic carbon. With global warming intensifying, these soils are increasingly exposed to microbial decomposition. Further, Arctic warming and longer growing seasons drive regional greening, potentially accelerating the degradation of the previously frozen organic matter through ...

Using dendroclimatic analysis of exotic deciduous conifers in an arboretum to document tree growth in response to climate change, Northeast Ohio, USA

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Rising temperatures and wetter conditions in the Midcontinent of North America are influencing climate responses in trees. Dendroclimatological analyses of four exotic deciduous conifer species from Secrest Arboretum, Northeast Ohio help identify past, present and future climate‐tree interactions.

Open letter: Brazil at a crossroads—Protecting peatlands is essential for post‐COP30 climate leadership

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
This Open Letter highlights peatlands as critical yet overlooked ecosystems in Brazil's climate and biodiversity policies. By translating scientific evidence into clear, actionable priorities for policymakers, it supports more accurate climate reporting, effective mitigation strategies, and improved land‐use governance.

Diagnosing the 11‐year solar cycle's influence on the East Atlantic pattern

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A previously unidentified solar‐cycle response in the East Atlantic pattern is found in late winter at lag +3 years with larger amplitude than the NAO response. A statistically significant NAO response to the solar cycle is seen in late winter at lag 0 years.
