Under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 the operators of coal mines are required (effective June 30, 1970) to maintain the average concentration of respirahle dust in active workings at or helow 3.0 mg/m.3 The standard is reduced to 2.0 mg/m3 after December 30, 1972.

Abstract This paper presents concentrations of SO 2 , NO 2 and total suspended particulates (TSP) in the atmosphere as well as the quantity of dustfall. Air samples were collected periodically over a 1-year period at eight monitoring stations situated in an area of 8 × 8 km 2 , located in the Central Coal Region area of the Lublin Coal Basin.
