Spontaneous combustion in coal pillars: Buoyancy and oxygen starvation
Summary: A one-dimensional free convection problem models the oxidation and heating of a coal pillar in which air flow, convecting oxygen up a uniform distribution of fractures, is driven by buoyancy arising from heat generated as the oxygen reacts with coal on the fracture surfaces.
