THE discovery of eight coal seams of workable quality in the Geological Survey Apley Barn Borehole1,2, sunk in 1960–61 near Witney, prompted the recent sinking of a second borehole (1970–71) near Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire. This borehole is situated between Bicester and Chipping Norton some 14 miles north-east of the Apley Barn Borehole (Fig. 1).

Although the presence of Upper Coal Measures under the Mesozoic rocks around Burford has been known for nearly 100 years, productive Westphalian was proved for the first time in this area by the IGS Apley Barn borehole, near Witney, where Upper Carboniferous strata were entered at 250–19 m.

A geological study seeking to determine, for economic purposes, the value of the Sydney Coalfield as a source of coal supply. Limitations of the coalfield come under two main heads: a. Areal extent of the undersea coalfield. b. The distance from shore at which coal can be mined at a cost of production permitting its profitable sale. Conclusions reached
