Effects of coarse-grained materials on properties of residual soil

open access: yesEngineering Geology, 2006
Abstract Residual soils are generally characterised by a low coefficient of permeability and high shrinkage potential. Several soil improvement methods can be applied to overcome these problems, including mixing the residual soil with coarse-grained soils.

Investigation of the Effect of Relative Density on the Dynamic Modulus and Damping Ratio for Coarse Grained Soil

open access: yesApplied Sciences (Switzerland)
As the critical dynamic parameters for soil, an extensive examination of the dynamic elastic modulus Ed and damping ratio λ in coarse-grained soil is of significant theoretical and practical importance.

Elastic-viscoplastic model for coarse-grained soil considering particle breakage

open access: yesComputers and Geotechnics
This paper presents a novel elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model for reproducing the time-dependent behaviour of coarse-grained soil considering particle breakage, by integrating the Unified Hardening (UH) model, the elastic-viscoplastic (EVP) model ...

Experimental Study on the Influences of the Fines Contents and Initial Moisture on the Water and Salt Migration of Coarse-Grained Saline Soil Subgrades

open access: yesSustainability
The construction of roads in saline soil areas usually involves using coarse-grained soil as roadbed fill material; studying the water–vapor–salt migration mechanism in coarse-grained saline soil subgrades is crucial for ensuring the ...

A Dynamic Method for Determining the Soil Water Characteristic Curve for Coarse-Grained Soils

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2000
Abstract The air-entry suction is an extremely important parameter in the water characteristic curve, but is difficult to identify when using conventional static methods such as the pressure plate apparatus. In the dynamic method described herein, instantaneous measurement of matric suction and water content are acquired from a soil ...

Comparison of Theoretical and Laboratory Permeability for Coarse-Grained Soil

2020
The permeability of soil is an essential parameter in estimating the quantity of seepage under foundation of hydraulic structures, which in turn affect the stability of structures. Empirical correlations such as Hazen, Kozeny–Carman, Breyer, Slitcher, Terzaghi, USBR, Alyamani and Sen are function of grain sizes, porosity/void ratio, coefficient of ...

Latent Heat of Frozen Saline Coarse‐Grained Soil

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1985
In recognition of the need to predict the thermal regime in arctic offshore structures, a laboratory research program was constructed to evaluate the latent heat of fusion of a coarsegrained soil w...

Deformation characteristics of coarse-grained soil with various gradations

Journal of Central South University, 2014
By using large scale triaxial shearing apparatus, consolidated-drained shear tests were conducted on coarse-grained soil with different gradations. In order to describe their deformation rules, three main characteristics of tangent Poisson ratio curves were summarized and the reason was revealed by dividing the movement of soil particles into two kinds:

Temporary Solidification of Coarse Grained Soil by Magnetorheological Fluids

Soil Dynamics Symposium in Honor of Professor Richard D. Woods, 2005
Magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) are suspensions of micron-sized, magnetizable particles in a base fluid such as water, oil, or silicon, that freely transition from fluid to semi-fluid to solid states when subjected to magnetic fields. The pr esent paper explores the usage of MRFs to temporarily solidify coarse -grained soils.

Modeling SWCC for Coarse-Grained and Fine-Grained Soil

2020
Following Chap. 2, the work is extended to predict SWCC of a soil with different initial densities by using Bayesian method, for both coarse-grained and fine-grained soil. An adjustment parameter (β) is introduced to express the relationships between the matric suctions of two soil samples.
