Dumpsite Seabed Characterization of the San Pedro Basin, CA, From Autonomous Vehicle Observations

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A wide‐area seabed survey was conducted using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in a known dumpsite off the coast of Southern California that has been found to have widespread sediment contamination from the chemical dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT).

Estimating three-dimensional current fields in the Yeosu Bay using coastal acoustic tomography system

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Observation of current speeds in coastal seas is crucial because it can provide useful information for ship operations, fishing activities, and rapid responses to marine disasters.

Rhyming in the cold: first evidence of soniferous fishes in the Southern Ocean

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
The acoustic ecology of Southern Ocean fishes remains unknown due to a lack of dedicated acoustic research on the fishes of this ocean. Passive acoustic monitoring data were collected at the South African sub‐Antarctic Prince Edward Islands using an underwater acoustic recorder, and towed underwater Ski‐Monkey cameras were deployed to identify fish ...

Prediction of Water Temperature Based on Graph Neural Network in a Small-Scale Observation via Coastal Acoustic Tomography

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) is a remote sensing technique that utilizes acoustic methodologies to measure the dynamic characteristics of the ocean in expansive marine domains.

Effects of surface bubble layers on coastal acoustic tomography transmissions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1988
Recent work by Lynch, Miller, and Chu has shown that one can obtain surface wave frequency-directional spectra with low-frequency (∼225 Hz) acoustic tomography in coastal regions Lynch et al., J. Geophys. Res. 92, 6869–6885 (1987)] using the travel-time fluctuations of the acoustic multipaths as data.

Scalable low‐cost seabed landers: the missing link for sustained, integrated, long‐term observations in dynamic shallow seas

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Seabed landers, when equipped with a range of biotic and abiotic sensors, offer a non‐invasive and cost‐effective solution for ecosystem‐scale monitoring of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) in dynamic shallow seas.

Quantifying Migratory Bat Movements in Central Europe Across Seasons and Years Using a Vertical‐Looking Radar

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Vertical‐looking radar provides a first multi‐year analysis of migratory bat phenology in Europe. Bat activity was lowest in winter, increased from spring, and peaked in summer, with similar timing of pre‐ and post‐maternity migrations across years.

Multi‐Platform Deployments of Low‐Cost Devices for Cetacean Passive Acoustic Monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Recent advances in affordable, user‐friendly devices offer new opportunities to overcome cost constraints of underwater passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and expand acoustic data collection. In this study, we deployed low‐cost acoustic recorders and underwater cameras across a range of platforms in the Western Mediterranean, including fishing gear ...

Application of coastal acoustic tomography: calibration of open boundary conditions on a numerical ocean model for tidal currents

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT), which measures path-averaged currents from reciprocal acoustic transmission experiments and reconstructs velocity fields from the multiple path-averaged current data, is useful for monitoring tidal currents in coastal ...

Widespread Bomb Fishing in Indo‐Pacific Archipelago Revealed Through Machine Learning Accelerated Passive Acoustic Monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
AI‐accelerated passive acoustic monitoring reveals extensive bomb fishing within the Spermonde Archipelago, with annual incidents numbering in the thousands. ABSTRACT Bomb fishing is recognised as the most destructive fishing practice that can be performed in our oceans.
