Coastal uses and contaminant spread in the desert coastal region of Atacama
Chemosphere, 2022Ocean contamination mostly comes from anthropogenic contamination in watercourses. However, what happens in desert areas where watercourses are few or nonexistent? Are these coastal areas exempt from contamination? Do the remote locations of desert areas enable pristine coastal areas? Atacama is widely known for its desert aridity and mining resources;

Comparison Between Plants of Desert Dunes, Extreme Desert, and Coastal Dunes
Adaptations of Desert Organisms, 1996The principal differences between the plants of desert and coastal dune areas are that in many coastal dune systems, plants have to withstand the stresses of salt-spray and inundation by sea water in addition to that of sand mobility (Costing and Billings 1942; Boyce 1954; Barbour et al. 1973, 1985; Chapman 1976).

Dynamics of the South American Coastal Desert
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1993Abstract The world's driest coastal desert is in South America along the coasts of Peru and Chile. The desert's maintenance is investigated by studying the local dynamics of the low-level southerly flow along the coast. A linear boundary-layer model is used in which a Boussinesq atmosphere is driven by a surface thermal contrast on a β plane.

The coastal deserts in Egypt are found along the Mediterranean (east and west), the Red Sea, and the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba in Sinai Peninsula. The variations in their floristic composition and vegetation structure are varied considerably. The association between the landform units and their floristic features showed significant differences.

Metal Use and Production among Coastal Societies of the Atacama Desert*
Archaeometry, 2014"In this paper, we focus on the study of metal objects associated with populations living on the northern coast of Chile in the Late Intermediate and Late periods (c. ad 1000–1550). Our contribution is based on morphometric and physico-chemical (ICP–AES, PIXE and metallographic sections) analyses of the quintessential coastal metal object: the fish ...
