Dynamics of the South American Coastal Desert
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1993Abstract The world's driest coastal desert is in South America along the coasts of Peru and Chile. The desert's maintenance is investigated by studying the local dynamics of the low-level southerly flow along the coast. A linear boundary-layer model is used in which a Boussinesq atmosphere is driven by a surface thermal contrast on a β plane.

The coastal deserts in Egypt are found along the Mediterranean (east and west), the Red Sea, and the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba in Sinai Peninsula. The variations in their floristic composition and vegetation structure are varied considerably. The association between the landform units and their floristic features showed significant differences.

An alternative water supply for chilean coastal desert villages
International Journal of Water Resources Development, 1992The measured domestic water consumption rates in two fishing villages on the arid north coast of Chile were 14.2 and 19.7 l/pers/day. The villagers pay 10% of their family income for water in Chungungo and 6% in Los Hornos. The true subsidized cost of the water would represent 39% and 26% respectively of average family income.
