Using dendroclimatic analysis of exotic deciduous conifers in an arboretum to document tree growth in response to climate change, Northeast Ohio, USA

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Rising temperatures and wetter conditions in the Midcontinent of North America are influencing climate responses in trees. Dendroclimatological analyses of four exotic deciduous conifer species from Secrest Arboretum, Northeast Ohio help identify past, present and future climate‐tree interactions.

Minimising flood risk accumulation through effective private and public sector engagement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Flooding is a global problem affecting both developing and developed countries. Academics and practitioners in climate science frequently argue that changing climatic conditions are likely to worsen the length and severity of these flood events, which ...

Land data assimilation of satellite‐based surface soil moisture: Impact on atmospheric simulations over the contiguous United States

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Soil Moisture Active Passive soil moisture retrievals are assimilated into a land surface model and the resulting land reanalysis product is used to initialise the land component of coupled land‐atmosphere experiments. We show that the local impact of land data assimilation on the atmosphere is influenced by two factors: the magnitude by which it ...

Sea level rise adaptation: emerging lessons for local policy development [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Many coastal communities across the United States are beginning to plan for climate-related sea level rise. While impacts and solutions will vary with local conditions, jurisdictions which have begun this process seem to pass through three common stages ...

Mesoscale dynamics of cyclone Leslie (2018): A diagnostic analysis of a rare Iberian landfall

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study presents a successful numerical simulation of cyclone Leslie (2018), using WRF‐ARW v4.5.1. Several mesoscale dynamics were identified indicative of the occurrence of sting jet and cold conveyor belt, which potentiated the record‐breaking winds in central Portugal.

Meteorological conditions leading to a catastrophic, rain‐induced landslide in Cameroon in October 2019

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
October 2019 was characterized by three main multiday wet spells in Bafoussam and Dschang. Our results indicated that wet spells were influenced by a vortex pair near the Gulf of Guinea, a strong Sahara Heat Low located anomalously far east and north, a northward shift of the intertropical discontinuity, an enhancement of the inland penetration of the ...

Growth conditions of tree species relative to climate change and sea level rise in low-lying Mid Atlantic coastal forests

open access: yesFrontiers in Forests and Global Change
IntroductionCoastal forests occupy low-lying elevations, typically adjacent to tidal salt marshes. Exposed to increased flooding with sea level rise, coastal forests have retreated as salt marshes advance upslope.
