Tracking the impact of bottom trawling on benthic habitat status

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract Bottom trawling is the most widespread physical disturbance to marine benthic habitats, yet broadscale assessments of its impact remain limited. We developed a quantitative framework to evaluate trawling effects on benthic habitats at broad spatial scales based on the sentinels of seabed (SoS) indicator.

Assessing responses of reef island seabirds to environmental and anthropogenic drivers

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract Tropical insular ecosystems face escalating, cumulative impacts of land‐ and sea‐based ecological threats that jeopardize the long‐term sustainability of their native communities. This joint vulnerability is epitomized by reef island seabirds, which are exposed to reef decline and coastal erosion driven by climate change, reduction in prey ...

Long‐Term Fish Assemblage Responses to Instream Restoration in Boreal Streams: Insights From a 24‐Year BACI Study

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activities and climate change, emphasizing the need for effective habitat restoration supported by long‐term monitoring. We examined fish species responses to instream restoration in six boreal streams in northern Finland over a 24‐year period (1999–2022) using a Before–After–Control ...

Global Warming, Local Responses: Why Treelines Do Not Respond Uniformly to Climate Change in the French Pyrenees

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 35, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Treeline ecotones are key indicators of environmental change, yet their responses to climate warming vary markedly across landscapes. This study investigates how elevation and local environmental contexts moderate warming effects on treeline dynamics. Location French Pyrenees. Time Period 1950s to 2015.

Guild‐Based Metacommunity Internal Structure: Insights From Waterbird Assemblages in a Dynamic Estuarine System

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Understanding how ecological processes shape species assemblages in dynamic environments is central to community ecology. Estuarine waterbirds are a compelling system for metacommunity analysis because their high mobility, functional diversity and sensitivity to environmental variation make them well suited to examine how assembly is ...
