Coastal Protection for Tsunamis

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Previous research showed that a tsunami similar to the 1755 event would inundate Caxias’ low-ground areas in Oeiras municipality, Portugal. However, the streets of downtown Caxias were not well reproduced, which is a limitation of the area’s mitigation strategies and evacuation plan.

The Value of Coastal Wetlands for Hurricane Protection

open access: yesAMBIO: A Journal of the Human Environment, 2008
Coastal wetlands reduce the damaging effects of hurricanes on coastal communities. A regression model using 34 major US hurricanes since 1980 with the natural log of damage per unit gross domestic product in the hurricane swath as the dependent variable and the natural logs of wind speed and wetland area in the swath as the independent variables was ...

High‐elevation endemic plants predicted to lose habitat from changing climate in Washington State

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise High‐elevation plants face unique challenges from potential climate change impacts that will likely require upslope migration into increasingly smaller suitable habitat. This situation is particularly acute for endemic species that by definition occupy small geographic ranges.

Wave Height Forecasting in the Bay of Bengal Using Multivariate Hybrid Deep Learning Models

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The development in coastal engineering and maritime transport demands accurate wave height prediction. In this study, hybrid deep learning models, including CNN-LSTM, CNN-BiLSTM, CNN-GRU, and CNN-BiGRU, are employed to develop regional multivariate wave ...

Seasonal variation in wind speed and oceanic salt spray favors delayed reproduction in coastal yellow monkeyflowers

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise The optimal timing of reproduction depends on the relative risk and benefit of continued growth. These risks and benefits depend on the local environment, which varies seasonally. While temperature and water availability are well‐studied selective agents on reproductive timing, less is known about other seasonally variable factors ...

Wave–Current Interactions in the Agulhas Retroflection: The Beluga Reefer Accident

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The Beluga Reefer accident underscores the hidden risks associated with complex wave–current interactions along South Africa’s coastline, particularly in the Agulhas Current retroflection zone.

Hydrodynamic Performance of a Hybrid System Combining a Fixed Breakwater and a Wave Energy Converter: An Experimental Study

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
In this paper, a hybrid system integrating a fixed breakwater and an oscillating buoy type wave energy converter (WEC) is introduced. The energy converter is designed to extract the wave power by making use of the wave-induced heave motions of the three ...

COASTAL GEOMORPHOLOGY, COASTAL PROTECTION, AND MANAGEMENT IN DENMARK AND SWEDEN

open access: yesPROCEEDINGS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING IN THE OCEAN, 1999
Coastal geomorphology, coastal protection and management in Denmark and Sweden were investigated through a field study and collaboration with local researchers. Coastal managementregulations and protection schemes such as the right of public access to the beach and groin system have been well established in Denmark since 1241 and early 19th century ...

Foliar salt spray exclusion and tissue tolerance underlie local adaptation to oceanic salt spray

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Surviving the effects of oceanic salt spray is critical for plants in coastal ecosystems, yet the mechanisms of coastal plant resilience to salt spray are not well understood. We investigated mechanisms of salt spray adaptation by comparing five latitudinal pairs of yellow monkeyflower accessions locally adapted to coastal and inland ...

Diagnosing the system: Mental health, necropolitical uncare, and the abolition of migration detention

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines the psychological effects of migration detention in the European Union's Closed Controlled Access Center (CCAC) on Samos through an ecological lens. It explores a double normalization of suffering: the brutalization of necropolitical migration governance and the simultaneous understanding of resulting distress as an ...
