Coastal sand dunes as biological systems
Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Section B. Biological Sciences, 1989SynopsisWith the gradation of intensities of environmental factors from the strand-line to stable inland areas, coastal dunes show many ecological phenomena especially clearly. These are reviewed broadly, with some emphasis on topics on which important advances are being made.

Coastal sand dunes as geomorphological systems
Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Section B. Biological Sciences, 1989SynopsisThe importance of aeolian deposition is clearly shown by the size and bulk of coastal dunes. Sand dunes occur where there is a large supply of sand, a wind to move it, and a place in which it can accumulate. A dune classification is presented which takes into account the origin, internal geometry and surface geomorphology of coastal dunes ...

Reddening of tropical coastal dune sands
Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 1983Summary This paper describes the pedological processes, including that of reddening, in latosol formation in dune sands on humid tropical coastlines. A time-scale is established for these processes in South-east India, Sri Lanka and the Natal Province of the Republic of South Africa.

Spider Associations in Coastal Sand Dunes
Oikos, 1973An investigation of the dune-living spiders was made during 1960-1962 in a coastal sand dune area of 40 ha at Sandhammaren, Province SkAne, Sweden. Eleven subdivisions were recognized for a vegetational survey; 821 samples from areas of 1 m2 each collected.

Nitrogen transformation in coastal sands and dune soils
Journal of Arid Environments, 1984Nitrification, N-leaching and NO 3 − -N reduction were studied in coastal sands and dune soils. Surprisingly high rates of nitrification were found when immature dune sands (that is uncolonized sands; and those from below Ammophila and H. rhamnoides ) were incubated at 25 °C with (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ; with rates of NO 3 − -N production eventually ...

Coastal sand dune stabilization in the Pacific Northwest
International Journal of Biometeorology, 1977Coastal dunes are stabilized in three stages: (1) The initial stage uses sand-stilling grasses established vegetatively. For this purpose, European beachgrass,Ammophila arenaria (L.) Link., is most used, followed by American beachgrass,A. breviligulata Fern., or American dunegrass,Elymus mollis Trin.

Adaptations of plants to burial in coastal sand dunes
Canadian Journal of Botany, 1998One of the most obvious features on the foredunes and strands of coasts and lakes is recurrent burial in sand. Burial levels vary in different coastal sand dune systems and influence the physical and biotic microenvironment of the plant and soil. Foredune plants along coasts possess numerous adaptations to withstand burial.

The coastal sand-dune plants of eight species; Argusia sibirica, Calystegia soldanella, Elymus mollis, Lithospermum zollingeri, Raphanus sativus, Salsola collina, Zoysia macrostachya, and Zoysia sinica were collected from the Shindu-ri coastal sand dune.

Coastal sand dunes : a review of management strategies for dune stabilization
The primary objective of this technical note is to provide a US-centric review on historic and current management approaches for dune stabilization efforts. This includes methods for promoting dune formation via natural aeolian processes, as well as more hands-on management approaches, including hybrid dune construction.Peter Tereszkiewicz +2 more
