From Surface to Bulk Activation: Tailoring the Porosity and Surface Chemistry of Resorcinol‐Formaldehyde Carbon Sorbents for Atmospheric Water Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A bulk activation route to produce nanoporous carbons for atmospheric water harvesting by incorporating potassium hydroxide during resorcinol‐formaldehyde polycondensation. These high‐oxygen sorbents deliver daily water yields up to 23 L kg−1 day−1 with great cyclability, providing a scalable solution for water production in diverse climates.

Overtopping of Coastal Structures by Tsunami Waves [PDF]

open access: yesGeosciences, 2017
Following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, Japanese tsunami protection guidelines stipulate that coastal defences should ensure that settlements are shielded from the coastal inundation that would result from Level 1 tsunami events (with return periods in the order of about 100 years).

Influence of Long Jetties on Coastal and Estuarine Hydro-Sedimentological Patterns in a Microtidal Region: Potential for Mud Deposit Formation

open access: yesCoasts
Given the continuous expansion of global trade, coastal and estuarine environments have been increasingly modified by anthropogenic pressures associated with port development, particularly through inlet stabilization by jetties, which often causes ...

Monitoring of Grouting Compactness in Tendon Duct Using Multi-Sensing Electro-Mechanical Impedance Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
The structural integrity of post-tensioning prestressed concrete structures with tendon ducts highly depends on the grouting quality in construction. This paper proposes a real-time approach to monitoring the grouting compactness in tendon ducts using ...

Investigation of the transport characteristics of Pb(II) in sand-bone char columns

open access: yesScience Progress, 2021
Pb(II) leakage from batteries, dyes, construction materials, and gasoline threaten human health and environmental safety, and suitable adsorption materials are vitally important for Pb(II) removal. Bone char is an outstanding adsorbent material for water

Pullout Bearing Capacity of End-Bearing Torpedo Anchors in Cohesive Soil Seabed

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
As a new type of deep-sea anchoring foundation, thetorpedo anchor has the characteristics of simple installation, low cost, and high bearing capacity. Compared with the torpedo anchor without an anchor wing, the end-bearing torpedo anchor forms pile end ...

Concepts of Design of Coastal Structures

open access: yesCoastal Engineering 1976, 1976
Certain design of the existing and proposed coastal structures for lateral loading in the United States is presently based upon the use of timber which is structurally inefficient in the elastic range. Figure 1, for example, indicates the plan of timber pile structure.

Damage to coastal structures

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2014
AbstractOn March 11, 2011, the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan struck off the coast of the Tohoku region of the country, and was subsequently named the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake by the Japan Metrological Agency. The Mw 9.0 earthquake generated strong motions that affected the island of Honshu from Tokyo Bay to the ...
