Zebra stripes: the questions raised by the answers

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 6, Page 2660-2680, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Multiple hypotheses have been suggested to explain why the three zebra species (Equus quagga, E. grevyi and E. zebra) are striped. We review how well these theories explain the nature (rather than simply the existence) of the stripes. Specifically, we explore how well different theories explain (i) the form of zebra stripes (especially on ...

Lightning Characteristics of Atmospheric Rivers Over the Americas Observed by GOES‐16

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 22, 28 November 2025.
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) have long been recognized as a major precipitation deliverer in western North America. Meanwhile, ARs in inland and east coast areas and their impacts beyond precipitation are starting to get recognized. The GOES‐16 satellite, with its longitudinal location, provides an opportunity for improved observational ...

Breeding for quantitative disease resistance: Case studies, emerging approaches, and exploiting pathogen variation

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 65, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Abstract Host resistance, using qualitative genes with major effects, such as resistance (R) genes, is one of the most effective disease control strategies. However, because major gene‐derived resistance wanes over time, breeders must increasingly focus on quantitative trait loci and minor effect genes, which, when pyramided together, can confer ...

Anomalously cool clumped isotope temperatures in tropical lagoon carbonates

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, Volume 11, Issue 5, Page 1479-1496, November 2025.
Carbonate clumped isotopes were used to reconstruct paleoclimate from lagoon sediments in the central tropical Pacific. Results were anomalously cool compared to modern measurements and other paleoclimate records. This study highlights the important of understanding carbonate facies and depositional environments in interpreting clumped isotope results.

Anti‐LGBTIQ rhetoric and electoral outcomes under the shadow of war: Evidence from Poland's 2023 parliamentary election

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Political Research, Volume 64, Issue 4, Page 2078-2092, November 2025.
Abstract The existing literature debates how war can precipitate shifts in electoral coalitions. However, what remains unclear are the underlying cultural contestations affected by war, including how homo‐ and transphobia have been weaponized politically as a key social division during wartime elections.
