ABSTRACT Black Americans with disabilities experience a range of inequities including barriers to access, social stigmatization, and health outcomes that are greater than both their White and their nondisabled peers. This conceptual article explains in detail these inequities. The authors provide an overview of the existing models of disability used in

Robust Cochlear Modiolar Axis Detection in CT [PDF]
The cochlea, the auditory part of the inner ear, is a spiral-shaped organ with large morphological variability. An individualized assessment of its shape is essential for clinical applications related to tonotopy and cochlear implantation. To unambiguously reference morphological parameters, reliable recognition of the cochlear modiolar axis in ...

Hearing Loss and Its Relation to Loneliness and Depression—A Population‐Based Cohort Study
This study investigated the relationship between hearing loss, loneliness, and depression using data from the Gutenberg Health Study. It found that hearing loss is significantly associated with higher levels of loneliness and depressive symptoms, with severe to complete hearing loss markedly increasing risks for loneliness and mild to severe hearing ...

A Clinical Feasibility Study of Spinal Evoked Compound Action Potential Estimation Methods
Abstract Objectives Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment for chronic neuropathic pain. Recently, SCS has been enhanced further with evoked compound action potential (ECAP) sensing. Characteristics of the ECAP, if appropriately isolated from concurrent stimulation artifact (SA), may be used to control, and aid in the programming of, SCS systems.

While both cochlear implants and bone conduction implants improve tinnitus symptoms, cochlear implants provide significantly greater suppression across multiple tinnitus severity measures and a higher cure rate, positioning it as the preferred option for tinnitus management in asymmetric hearing loss and single‐sided deafness patients.

Improvements to the retractor and muscle flap design for minimally invasive cochlear implantation
Objective: The aim of this study was to improve muscle flaps and to evaluate surgical outcomes with the use of a novel specialized retractor, which is a surgical instrument used to locate and shape a bony seat for minimally invasive cochlear implantation.

Bimodal Cochlear Implants: Measurement of the Localization Performance as a Function of Device Latency Difference [PDF]
Bimodal cochlear implant users show poor localization performance. One reason for this is a difference in the processing latency between the hearing aid and the cochlear implant side. It has been shown that reducing this latency difference acutely improves the localization performance of bimodal cochlear implant users.
