An Overlooked Habitat‐Dependent Link Between Metabolism and Water Loss in Reptiles

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We measured the gas exchange of six lizard and six snake species, under high and low air humidity, and two intriguing patterns emerged. First, although desert species lose less water via evaporation than similar‐sized mesic species under similar conditions, water loss is virtually the same when each is exposed to its natural conditions.

Immunochemical detection of the crustacean cardioactive peptide in the cephalic ganglia of cockroaches (Blattodea: Blattidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2015
In insects, the crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) is involved mainly in the regulation of ecdysis and is both a hormone secreted into the haemolymph and a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter in the nervous system.

The X chromosome of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is homologous to a fly X chromosome despite 400 million years divergence

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2019
Background Sex chromosome evolution is a dynamic process that can proceed at varying rates across lineages. For example, different chromosomes can be sex-linked between closely related species, whereas other sex chromosomes have been conserved for > 100 ...

Microarrayed Allergen Molecules Distinguish IgE Sensitisation to Blomia tropicalis and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study established a microarray containing a representative panel of purified Blo t and Der p allergens for the identification of patients sensitised to Blo t and/or Der p. Results indicate that the microarray based on Blo t and Der p allergens is a useful tool for the identification of Blo t‐ and/or Der p‐sensitised patients. The microarray may be

Structural Basis for Trivalent Cross‐Linking of a Patient‐Derived IgE Antibody by the Major Peanut Allergen Ara h 2.0201

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
Graphical The crystal structure of a major peanut allergen Ara h 2.0201 in a complex with a human‐derived IgE Fab fragment has been determined. The immunocomplex shows the trivalent binding of Fabs, creating a cross‐linked structure effective in the formation of large complexes on the surface of effector cells. Hydroxylation of proline has implications

The locust frontal ganglion: a central pattern generator network controlling foregut rhythmic motor patterns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The frontal ganglion (FG) is part of the insect stomatogastric nervous system and is found in most insect orders. Previous work has shown that in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, the FG constitutes a major source of innervation to the ...

Reactive direction control for a mobile robot: A locust-like control of escape direction emerges when a bilateral pair of model locust visual neurons are integrated [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Locusts possess a bilateral pair of uniquely identifiable visual neurons that respond vigorously to the image of an approaching object. These neurons are called the lobula giant movement detectors (LGMDs). The locust LGMDs have been extensively studied

Early Epidemiologic and Immune Predictors of Atopic Dermatitis: Reduced Cord Blood Regulatory B10 Cells in the Munich Atopy Prediction Study (MAPS)

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
In this prospective birth cohort from Munich, comprehensive clinical assessments and longitudinal lifestyle questionnaires were combined with cord blood immune profiling. Infants who later developed AD showed altered cord blood immune signatures, including reduced CD4+ T cells, increased B cells and markedly decreased Breg cells. Epidemiologic factors,

Cockroach allergy in a group of Turkish children with respiratory allergies

open access: yesThe Turkish Journal of Pediatrics, 2004
Exposure to cockroach may lead to exacerbations of bronchial asthma and/or allergic rhinitis in sensitized patients. Although there is a widespread belief that cockroach allergy is a common problem in patients with respiratory allergies, little is
