Code, coding and coded perspectives

Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society, 2003
I begin with a discussion of code and its primary types: embedded, source, binary and interpreted. I then consider three measures in which code is fundamentally different than print. In particular I speak of the trust inherent in connectivity, the organizational difficulties of information, and the problem of archiving information that may change ...

Code Refinement of Stencil Codes

Parallel Processing Letters, 2014
A straightforward implementation of an algorithm in a general-purpose programming language does usually not deliver peak performance: Compilers often fail to automatically tune the code for certain hardware peculiarities like memory hierarchy or vector execution units.

Iterative Coding for Network Coding

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2013
We consider communication over a noisy network under randomized linear network coding. Possible error mechanisms include node- or link-failures, Byzantine behavior of nodes, or an overestimate of the network min-cut. Building on the work of Kotter and Kschischang, we introduce a systematic oblivious random channel model.

To Code or Not to Code

2017
Businesses that purchase packaged application software – for example, an Enterprise Resource Planning system – must make choices about customization. Software vendors, anecdotal evidence, and practitioner-oriented research all recommend that organizations should customize software as little as possible, and instead adapt their processes to meet the ...
