Die erste Koralle aus dem Tertiär von Java ist 1864 durch Duncan vom Goenoeng Sela im Tji Lanangtal beschrieben worden. 1867 hat dann Reuss die erste grössere Suite von Tertiärkorallen bearbeitet, die v. Hochstetter anlässlich der Novara-Expedition gesammelt hatte.

The Phylum Coelenterata contains a wide variety of simple aquatic animals, many of which are brightly-coloured and delicately beautiful. They include the jellyfish, sea anemones, hydroids, soft and stony corals. Most are marine, but there are a few freshwater forms such as the hydras.

Immunorecognition of allogeneic tissue followed by incompatibility reactions now appears characteristic of the Coelenterata or Cnidaria. Indeed, allogeneic incompatibility has been described in controlled experiments with colonial hydroids (1, 2), anthozoans (3), gorgonians (4) and reef-building corals (5).

Some Octocorallia (Coelenterata) from Australia

Two new species of octocorals, Morchellana tixierae, sp. nov., and Solenocaulon grandis, sp. nov., are described. The species were amongst specimens collected from Bowling Green Bay, near Townsville, Queensland. Eight previously described species were also identified among the collected specimens.

Cnidaria und Acnidaria bilden zusammen den Stamm Coelenterata. Hier brauchen wir nur die Cnidarier (Nesseltiere), die giftigen Polypen, Quallen, Seewespen, Seeanemonen und Korallen zu besprechen. Sie finden sich in allen Meeren in einem Gurtel, der sich (mit kleinen Abweichungen) von etwa 45° nordlicher Breite bis 30° sudlicher Breite erstreckt (Abb. 1)
