Os coelhos possuem um metabolismo do cálcio único, pois a maioria do cálcio ingerido na dieta é absorvido a nível intestinal, sendo o excesso excretado pelos rins. Assim, a concentração sanguínea de cálcio nos coelhos é 30 a 50% superior à dos outros mamíferos, e apresenta um maior intervalo de valores de referência.
