In this article we examine the effects of the emergence of a new replicator, memes, on the evolution of a pre-existing replicator, genes. Using a version of the NKCS model we examine the effects of increasing the rate of meme evolution in relation to the rate of gene evolution, for various degrees of interdependence between the two replicators.

We review and investigate the current status of intransitivity as a potential obstacle in coevolution. Pareto-Coevolution avoids intransitivity by translating any standard superiority relation into a transitive Pareto-dominance relation. Even for transitive problems though, cycling is possible.

Phages, viruses of bacteria, are ubiquitous. Many phages require host cell death to successfully complete their life cycle, resulting in reciprocal evolution of bacterial resistance and phage infectivity (antagonistic coevolution). Such coevolution can have profound consequences at all levels of biological organisation.
