The term cognitivism describes an approach to the study of media that is characterized by methodological assumptions and research foci. Because of cognitivism's emphasis on reasoning, argumentation, and naturalism and its focus on the mental world of media users, its closest ties in the academy are to analytic philosophy and the psychological sciences.

The paper explicates a set of criteria the joint satisfaction of which is taken to qualify moral judgements as cognitive. The paper examines evidence that some moral judgements meet these criteria, and relates the resulting conception of moral judgements to ongoing controversies about cognitivism in ethics.

Abstract Chapter 7 explores cognitivism as an alternative to realist and semiotic theories of the nature of film. The chapter develops a diagnostic recognition framework for film derived from a biased competition theory of attention and research on the role played by situation models in narrative comprehension.
