Cognitive coherence relations and hypertext

Proceedings of the twelfth ACM conference on Hypertext and Hypermedia - HYPERTEXT '01, 2001
In previous work we argued that cinematic language may provide insights into the construction of narrative coherence in hypertext, and we identified in the shot juxtaposition of rhetorical patterns the source of coherence for cinematic discourse. Here we deepen our analysis, to show how the mechanisms that underpin cinematic rhetorical patterns are the

Discourse markers and coherence relations

Linguistics and the Human Sciences, 2012
We examine how one particular coherence relation, Concession, is marked across languages and modalities, through an extensive analysis of the Concession relation, examining the types of discourse markers used to signal it. The analysis is contrastive from three different angles: markers, languages, and modalities.

Coherence Relations, Ellipsis and Contrastive Topics

Journal of Semantics, 2004
It has been observed (Kehler 1996, 2000, 2002) that ellipsis resolution processes interact with the inference processes underlying the establishment of coherence relations in discourse. For example, gapping only co-occurs with the coherence relation of Resemblance.

Literary coherence and related topics

1989
Contains a brief analysis of structural and other coherence in The Old Man and the Sea. Claims that Hemingway’s lengthy descriptions are sometimes irrelevant because they fail to add to the story’s progression.

Visualization approaches for coherence relations

2021

The Coherence-Relational Blockworld

The Coherence-Relational Blockworld (cRBW) is an adynamical, constraint-based ontology that unifies spacetime, matter, and experience as manifestations of global coherence. Instead of viewing reality as evolving in time, cRBW treats the universe as a single, self-consistent relational structure—an all-at-once solution to a set of coherence constraints ...

Coherence relation and clause linkage

Studies in Language, 2015
Abstract This paper proposes that adjunct island effects (Ross, 1967; Cattell, 1976) receive a discourse-semantic explanation. The exact formulation of this explanation builds upon previous work (e.g. Kehler, 2002) on island effects of conjuncts (Ross, 1967), which explains asymmetrical extraction from coordinate structures in English (that is ...

Relational Coherence and the Dread of Death: A Relational Coherence Framework Account

This paper develops the Relational Coherence Framework (RCF) to explain the universal human dread response to death-related stimuli. By modeling death as a topological collapse of relational coherence and dread as a predictive control signal, the framework unifies phenomenology, neuroscience, and physics into a testable field-theoretic model.
