An account is given of optical coherence theory as it existed in the 1950's when, essentially, only thermal sources and slow detectors were available and it sufficed to characterize the coherence and polarization properties of an electromagnetic field by second-order correlation functions.

Theory of coherent bremsstrahlung
Radiation Effects and Defects in Solids, 1985In this chapter we review theoretically the phenomenon of coherent bremsstrahlung (CB) of electrons traversing a crystal. This process has been studied for more than thirty years, but it now appears in a new light after the realization by Andersen [2.1] that CB and the more recently discovered process of channeling radiation (CR) constitute two ...

Modulation contrast and coherence theory
Applied Optics, 1976The image formation process in a modulation contrast microscope is studied from the coherence theory standpoint. A general expression for the image irradiance distribution is established. Some particular cases of interest are treated in detail.

This paper explores the conceptual dimension in theory acceptance, throws light on the notion of coherence between theories, and emphasizes the role of coherence between theories in theory acceptance. It is important, however, to recognize that the empirical-conceptual distinction, like most other distinctions in philosophy, is only pragmatic because ...

Journal of Fusion Energy, 1990
We propose that energy from nuclear fusion reactions can be coupled to a macroscopic system coherently (in the laser sense) through electromagnetic interaction of low energy photons. We report progress on the formulation of a theory for two-step reactions in which virtual fusion is followed by exothermic incoherent decay.

This theory was formulated originally by Glauber [6.1], where he considers the process of photon detection, which plays a central role. The basic process involved in the detection is the absorption of a photon and the corresponding generation of a photoelectron, measured via an electric current.

Theory of Theories: The Coherence Hypothesis
2023In exploring a theory about theories, I propose the "Coherence Hypothesis." This theory aims to address the question of how theories in various fields of knowledge relate to one another and the larger intellectual landscape.

We show that some basic results on the K-theory of noetherian rings can be extended to coherent rings.
