Quantum Limits of Coherent Beam Combining

CLEO Pacific Rim Conference, 2018
Coherent beam combining refers to the process of generating a bright output beam by merging independent input beams with locked relative phases. We report the first quantum mechanical noise limit calculations for coherent beam combining and compare our results to quantum-limited amplification.

Dynamic beam shaping with coherent beam combining

PhotonicsViews
AbstractCoherent beam combining (CBC) is a method of enhancing laser power. It has recently transitioned to industrial applications, unveiling new possibilities in laser technology. CBC merges multiple laser channels from a single source, controlling their phase to create constructive or destructive interference.

Fiber Lasers and Their Coherent Beam Combination

Optics and Photonics News, 2008
With high efficiency and exceptional beam quality, fiber lasers hold great promise. The 1-µm wavelength makes it possible for them to replace both diode- and lamp-pumped Nd:YAG lasers in the micromachining, automotive and biomedical markets.

Coherent Beam Combination in Integrated Optics

Nonlinear Guided-Wave Phenomena Physics and Applications, 1989
The coherent beam combination, or two-wave mixing, in nonlinear waveguide is a new area of great importance in integrated optics. The coherent beam combination has been successfully demonstrated in the bulk nonlinear materials, e.g., photorefractive1 or nonlocal Kerr materials,2 for image amplification,1,2 spectroscopy,3 etc.

Coherent beam combination in optical waveguides

SPIE Proceedings, 1990
A general theory for coherent coupling between two co-propagating or counterpropagating guided waves is formulated within the slowly varying envelope approximation. A pair of coupled nonlinear equations is obtained for the evolution of envelope functions. A numerical result is given for coherent coupling of two co-propagating pulses in a single mode

Generation of azimuthally and radially polarized beams by coherent polarization beam combination

Optics Letters, 2012
A new architecture for generating pure azimuthally and radially polarized beams is presented. It involves coherent polarization beam combination of two orthogonally polarized LP(11) fiber modes. Experimental results reveal that high purely polarized (polarization purity of 95% or better) azimuthal and radial beams can be generated.

Coherent Beam Combining of Fiber Amplifiers*

Lasers Congress 2016 (ASSL, LSC, LAC), 2016
Beam combining of laser arrays has become increasing viable over the past decade as the community has developed a better understanding of the requirements imposed by beam combining. Coherent beam combining (CBC) enables scaling the brightness by large amounts, in principle by as much as the number of elements.
