Optimized Silicon QPSK Modulator With 64-Gb/s Modulation Speed

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2015
We demonstrate a compact silicon quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulator consisting of two nested Mach-Zehnder interferometers with a size of 4.5-mm2. The V11 · L of the modulator is 1.4 V · cm with an insertion loss of 8 dB.

Communication through coherent control of quantum channels [PDF]

open access: yesQuantum, 2020
A completely depolarising quantum channel always outputs a fully mixed state and thus cannot transmit any information. In a recent Letter\cite{ebler18}, it was however shown that if a quantum state passes through two such channels in a quantum ...

Homodyne coherent detection of ASK and PSK signals performed by a subcarrier optical phase-locked loop [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Optical transmission systems based on homodyne coherent detection of 2-ASK and pilot carrier 2-PSK signals have been implemented. ASK data has been transmitted at 2.5 Gbps, while 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps PSK systems have been tested.

Data-Aided Versus Blind Single-Carrier Coherent Receivers

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2010
Fiber-optic research in signal processing for the first generation of coherent communication systems was dominated by receivers with blind adaptation. Next-generation systems will require a scalable and modular design for higher order modulation formats.

Low-Complexity One-Step Digital Back-Propagation for Single Span High-Capacity Coherent Transmissions

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2017
A low-complexity one-step digital back-propagation (DBP) scheme is proposed to mitigate intrachannel and interchannel fiber nonlinearities in high-capacity single span transmissions.

Sensitivity Deterioration of Free-Space Optical Coherent/Non-Coherent OOK Modulation Receiver by Ambient Light Noise

open access: yesSensors, 2023
In free-space optical (FSO) communication systems, on–off keying (OOK) is a widely used modulation format. Coherent and non-coherent OOK receivers with sensitivities of −54.60 dBm and −51.25 dBm, respectively, were built with a communication rate of 1 ...

FPGA-Based Rate-Compatible LDPC Codes for the Next Generation of Optical Transmission Systems

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2016
In this paper, we propose a rate-compatible forward error-correcting (FEC) scheme based on low-density-parity check (LDPC) codes together with its software reconfigurable unified field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architecture.

Mitigating the Impact of Noise on Nonlinear Frequency Division Multiplexing

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
In the past years, nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM) has been investigated as a potentially revolutionary technique for nonlinear optical fiber communication.

Rhythms for Cognition: Communication through Coherence [PDF]

open access: yesNeuron, 2015
I propose that synchronization affects communication between neuronal groups. Gamma-band (30-90 Hz) synchronization modulates excitation rapidly enough that it escapes the following inhibition and activates postsynaptic neurons effectively. Synchronization also ensures that a presynaptic activation pattern arrives at postsynaptic neurons in a ...

Frequency-to-Time-Assisted Interferometry for Full-Field Optical Waveform Measurements With Picosecond Resolution and Microsecond Record Lengths

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2012
This paper describes and demonstrates a single-shot, full-field (amplitude and phase) optical waveform measurement technique that utilizes interferometry, frequency-to-time mapping, and four-quadrature coherent detection.
