‘Coherent Structures in turbulence’

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1975
This account of the Colloquium on Coherent Structures in Turbulence held at Southampton from 26-29 March 1974 presents a brief summary of two invited lectures and 42 formal presentations on turbulent shear-flow structure. A number of shorter contributions and discussions are also outlined.

Coherent Structures

1990
Abstract Organizing a logical account of a fashionable and fast-growing subject, like the study of coherent structures (or recognizable ‘deterministic’ patterns) in turbulent flows, is not without its difficulties. To begin with, quite a variety of such structures has now been identified, and, although different structures can appear to ...

COHERENCE AND STRUCTURE

GEOPHYSICS, 1974
The wavefield generated at the surface of the earth from a surface seismic source can be represented as a function F(f, k) in the frequency wave‐number domain. This function depends upon the source and the propagation characteristics of the underlying structure. For any particular frequency the spatial coherence as observed at two points [Formula: see

Coherent structures in tornado-like vortices

Physics of Fluids, 2018
The dynamics of tornadolike vortices is investigated through a set of novel physical experiments and modal analyses for a wide range of swirl ratios (0.22 ≤ S ≤ 0.96). Various physical phenomena such as wandering, vortex breakdown, or transition from one-cell to two-cell structures are observed.

SPATIALLY-VARYING AND COHERENT STRUCTURES

2006
This chapter is devoted to the theory and observation of coherent structures in the near-surface layer of the ocean. The upper ocean boundary layer is turbulent but not completely random. The phenomenon of self-organization occurs in a variety of nonlinear dissipative systems.

Coherent structures—reality and myth

The Physics of Fluids, 1983
The nature and significance of large-scale coherent structures in turblent shear flows are addressed. A definition for the coherent structure is proposed and its implications discussed. The characteristic coherent structure properties are identified and the analytical and experimental constraints in the eduction of coherent structures are examined ...

Coherent structures and riblets

Applied Scientific Research, 1995
We study the effect of the riblets on the coherent structures near the wall. The emphasis is put on the genesis of the quasi-streamwise vortices in the presence of the riblets. The quasi-streamwise vortices regenerate by the tilting of wall normal vorticity induced by prevailing structures. This requires a mechanism which leads to a temporal streamwise

Coherent structures in combustion

Progress in Energy and Combustion Science, 1996
A critical review is presented of the advances which have been made in the understanding of coherent-structure development in separated flows and of the implications of these discoveries, theoretical and practical, in the field of combustion. The main emphasis is placed on continuous combustion processes although some of the more general issues ...

Nanohydrodynamics and Coherent Structures

2003
What types of new flow phenomena may be expected at the nanoscale, and how will such flow phenomena affect lubrication and transport? The study of hydrodynamic flows at a macroscopic scale has revealed an astonishing variety of phenomena including creeping flows, interfacial patterns, laminar flows, flows in channels, Couette flows, vortex structures ...
