SPATIALLY-VARYING AND COHERENT STRUCTURES

2006
This chapter is devoted to the theory and observation of coherent structures in the near-surface layer of the ocean. The upper ocean boundary layer is turbulent but not completely random. The phenomenon of self-organization occurs in a variety of nonlinear dissipative systems.

Coherent structures—reality and myth

The Physics of Fluids, 1983
The nature and significance of large-scale coherent structures in turblent shear flows are addressed. A definition for the coherent structure is proposed and its implications discussed. The characteristic coherent structure properties are identified and the analytical and experimental constraints in the eduction of coherent structures are examined ...

Coherent structures and riblets

Applied Scientific Research, 1995
We study the effect of the riblets on the coherent structures near the wall. The emphasis is put on the genesis of the quasi-streamwise vortices in the presence of the riblets. The quasi-streamwise vortices regenerate by the tilting of wall normal vorticity induced by prevailing structures. This requires a mechanism which leads to a temporal streamwise

Nanohydrodynamics and Coherent Structures

2003
What types of new flow phenomena may be expected at the nanoscale, and how will such flow phenomena affect lubrication and transport? The study of hydrodynamic flows at a macroscopic scale has revealed an astonishing variety of phenomena including creeping flows, interfacial patterns, laminar flows, flows in channels, Couette flows, vortex structures ...

Coherent structures and turbulence

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1986
This is a personal statement on the present state of understanding of coherent structures, in particular their spatial details and dynamical significance. The characteristic measures of coherent structures are discussed, emphasizing coherent vorticity as the crucial property.

Structural Coherence Mathematics

Structural Coherence Mathematics (SCM) is a symbolic framework that reconstructs physics, identity, and cosmology from a single ontological principle: return. In SCM, an identity persists only if it returns — coherence is not assumed; it is structurally defined.

Visualization of Coherent Structures

1994
The visualization of coherent structures is illustrated in two-dimensional flows as rotating and stratified fluids. The visualization is based on the development of dye concentration for measurements of the gross properties of the structures, and on a particle tracking method, which provides detailed knowledge of the flow field.

Coherent Structures in Plasmas

1984
Both laboratory and cosmic plasmas are extremely non-equilibrium media. This fact is especially evident for laboratory plasmas, since the ionized gas cannot be in equilibrium with the cold walls of a vessel in which plasma is sustained. (We do not consider here the case of a weakly ionized thermal gas within a hot-walled vessel).
