COMPOSITION AND COINCIDENCE [PDF]
Abstract:Many philosophers say that the same atoms may compose at once a statue and a lump of matter that could outlive the statue. I reject this because no difference between the statue and the lump could explain why they have different persistence conditions.

Soma-axon coupling configurations that enhance neuronal coincidence detection. [PDF]
Coincidence detector neurons transmit timing information by responding preferentially to concurrent synaptic inputs. Principal cells of the medial superior olive (MSO) in the mammalian auditory brainstem are superb coincidence detectors.

Quintessence, cosmic coincidence, and the cosmological constant [PDF]
Recent observations suggest that a large fraction of the energy density of the Universe has negative pressure. One explanation is vacuum energy density; another is quintessence in the form of a scalar field slowly evolving down a potential.

Summary In this contribution, we propose a detailed study of interpolation‐based data‐driven methods that are of relevance in the model reduction and also in the systems and control communities. The data are given by samples of the transfer function of the underlying (unknown) model, that is, we analyze frequency‐response data.

Coincidence indices of sublattices and coincidences of colorings [PDF]
AbstractEven though a lattice and its sublattices have the same group of coincidence isometries, the coincidence index of a coincidence isometry with respect to a lattice Λ1and to a sublattice Λ2may differ. Here, we examine the coloring of Λ1induced by Λ2to identify how the coincidence indices with respect to Λ1and to Λ2are related.

Pushing Cherenkov PET with BGO via coincidence time resolution classification and correction
Bismuth germanate (BGO) shows good properties for positron emission tomography (PET) applications, but was substituted by the development of faster crystals like lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) for time-of-flight PET (TOF-PET).

Data‐driven performance metrics for neural network learning
Summary Effectiveness of data‐driven neural learning in terms of both local mimima trapping and convergence rate is addressed. Such issues are investigated in a case study involving the training of one‐hidden‐layer feedforward neural networks with the extended Kalman filter, which reduces the search for the optimal network parameters to a state ...

Kate Atkinson’s Crime Fiction: Exception as a Rule
This essay discusses the relationship between crime fiction and exception in Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie novels. By definition, crime novels depend on exception because deviation from the ordinary is the starting point of a plot and because they ...

Representative and highly sensitive express method of measurement of f-activity [PDF]
The method for determination of f-activity (spontaneous fission) of samples based on a combination of multiplicity spectrometry, measurement of radiation energy, and registration of time of long-range fission products is considered.
