Cytogenetic monitoring in coke oven workers

Cytogenetic markers (chromosomal aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges (SCE), cells with high frequency of SCE (HFC), the heterogeneity index SCE (SCE-H) and genetic polymorphism of genotypes GSTM1 and NAT2 were evaluated in the peripheral lymphocytes of 64 coke oven workers and 34 control subjects from the same plant.

OSHA activities are reviewed with respect to the development of a coke oven emissions standard. The final emissons standard promulgated in 1976 set a permissible exposure limit of 150 mg/cu m of the benzene soluble fraction of total particulate matter.

In summary, I might say that this paper may appear to be promoting non-recovery type ovens. This is not the case, since our firm’s only interest is to supply factual information. It is our opinion that the non-recovery oven is a tool that can supply supplemental coke to steel mills at a reduced coke cost.
