Revisiting Graphite Electrodes for Electric Arc Furnaces: Three‐Dimensional Microstructural Heterogeneity as a Design Parameter for Fracture Resistance

open access: yesCarbon Innovation, EarlyView.
Graphite electrodes are revisited as strategically important carbon materials for electric arc furnace steelmaking. By correlating three‐dimensional microstructural complexity with fracture energy, this work reveals a fundamental trade‐off between graphitization and energy dissipation, providing a data‐driven framework for the rational redesign of ...

Strength estimation of coke as porous material.

open access: yesTransactions of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, 1983
Research on the coke strength has recently been carried out treating the coke as a porous material and a new progress is made in the essential evaluation of coke strength. Previous researches have, however, discussed mainly the effects of porosity and/or distribution of pores on the strength and little has been studied on the inherent strength which ...

Composition of Purified CO2 From Steel Mill Processes—A Classification and Analytical Comparison With Commercial CO2

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
Due to the severe catalyst poisoning effect of certain trace components, the purity of CO2 is the main attribute to qualify it as syngas for further downstream processes. This study uses PTR–MS to investigate the trace components of the CO2 produced within the Carbon2Chem project.

Effect of alkaline elements on the reactivity, strength and structural properties of blast furnace cokes

open access: yesMetalurgija, 2015
The present study concerns itself on the adverse effects of alkaline elements like sodium and potassium on blast furnace cokes. To achieve a deeper insight on the effects of alkaline elements on coke reactivity and strength, industrial coke samples ...

Evolution of coke microstructure and metallurgical properties during graphitization in a blast furnace

open access: yes工程科学学报, 2018
The currently used low carbon operation in blast furnaces (BFs) leads to a thin coke layer and deterioration in gas and liquid permeability. Previous studies have reported that coke breeze, formed by the graphitization of coke, is one of the main ...

On Metal Carbonyl Compounds in Catalytic Methanol Synthesis: Detection, Consequences, and Removal

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
Deactivation of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts by metal carbonyl compounds in the feed gas is a critical problem in catalytic methanol synthesis. We utilize PTR–MS to identify potential chemical sources, detect contamination in an in‐house CO gas line, and validate filter methods for removing these catalyst poisons before synthesis.

Harnessing machine learning and optimization for informed chemical engineering decisions: A styrene reactor analysis

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
This study shows that integrating multiple machine learning models with optimization and decision‐making improves chemical process design, and that a consensus‐based strategy across models provides more robust and reliable operating recommendations than any single model, especially under limited or noisy data conditions.

The Tensile Strength of Industrial Cokes (2)

open access: yesJournal of the Fuel Society of Japan, 1976
In order to exmine the characteristics of bituminous coals or bitumens as binder these materials were carbonized with coke breeze or anthracite fines. The tensile strength of these cokes was measured using indirect tensile test.A study of the results has led to the conclusion that there exists a definite correlation between the tensile strength and the

Experimental methods in chemical engineering: Temperature‐programmed oxidation—TPO

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Temperature‐programmed oxidation (TPO) probes the oxidative capacity and redox properties of solid materials—catalysts, metal oxides, perovskites, and carbonaceous deposits. It identifies coke type, distribution, and reactivity. TPO instruments pass an oxidizing gas (diluted O2$$ {\mathrm{O}}_2 $$, air, or less commonly N2O$$ {\mathrm{N}}_2 ...
