On gust characteristics of cold pools

Cold pools are mesoscale atmospheric phenomena associated with showers and thunderstorms, they are characterized by a sudden temperature drop, pressure jump and strong gusty winds. At their edges, cold pools may trigger the onset of deep convection. Many studies focused on the temperature distribution and dynamics associated with cold pools while the ...

Convective Cold Pools and Tropical Cyclones

Monthly Weather Review
Abstract Convective cold pools (CPs) are inherent to mesoscale convective systems and have been identified in tropical cyclone (TC) eyewalls and rainbands. However, their distribution within TCs and their impacts on the TC enthalpy balance are not well understood. This gap is due to the scarcity of high-frequency observations over the ocean.

Morning breakup of cold pools in complex terrain

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2008
Under fair weather conditions, local flow patterns in areas of complex topography are driven by diurnal heating and cooling. If the topography is basin-shaped, downslope flows occurring at night accumulate (pool) in the basin valley to form a stable layer of cold air.

Mean Cold Pool Size of Quasi-Equilibrium Convection. Part I: Why Do Cold Pools Collide?

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
Abstract Precipitation-driven cold pools play an important role in organizing tropical convection. Previous studies of tropical convection in the radiative–convective equilibrium (RCE) setup found that cold pools tend to collide with each other and trigger new convection.

The dynamics of persistent cold-air pool breakup

2014
The wind-induced disruption and breakup of multiday cold-air pools are investigated using observational analyses and idealized numerical simulations. The observations are from the Persistent Cold-Air Pool (CAP) Study, which provides modern measurement of the meteorological processes affecting the duration of cold-air pools in the Salt Lake Valley of ...
