Plants adapted to cold winters go through annual cycles of gain followed by loss of freezing tolerance (cold acclimation and deacclimation). Warm spells during winter and early spring can cause deacclimation, and if temperatures drop, freezing damage may

COLD ADAPTATION AND THE ANAESTHETIC REQUIREMENT FOR CYCLOPROPANE IN RATS
The effect of cold adaptation at 4 degrees C on cyclopropane MAC was studied in 10 Wistar rats over a 16-week period. Compared with a similar control group (normally adapted), there was a significant decrease in weight gain and a significant increase in anaesthetic requirement in the cold-adapted rats.

Cold stress-induced lipid peroxidation and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense in tissues of the common Indian toad, Bufo melanostictus [PDF]
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exposure to short-term cold stress (30 min at 0-4°C) on lipid peroxidation and the non-enzymatic antioxidant defense system in liver, kidney and brain tissues of an ectothermic animal, the ...

Keratinocytes are required for normal cold and heat sensation [PDF]
Abstract Keratinocytes are the most abundant cell type in the epidermis, the most superficial layer of the skin. Historically, epidermal-innervating sensory neurons were thought to be the exclusive detectors and transmitters of environmental stimuli.

Cold-induced hyperphagia requires AgRP neuron activation in mice [PDF]
To maintain energy homeostasis during cold exposure, the increased energy demands of thermogenesis must be counterbalanced by increased energy intake. To investigate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this cold-induced hyperphagia, we asked whether agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons are activated when animals are placed in a cold environment ...

The Effect of Cold and Drought Stresses on Yield, Yield Components and Water Use Efficiency of some Corn Hybrids (Zea mays L.) [PDF]
Cold and drought stresses are considered as the most important factors limiting crop production. To evaluate the effect of these tow stresses on yield and yield components of corn hybrids, a field experiment was implemented in split plots based on a ...
