Cold seep is characterized by methane-rich fluids released from subsurface reservoirs, and it sustains the chemosynthetic ecosystems on the seafloor. Previous studies suggest that the activity of cold seep could affect the seawater chemistry and ambient temperature.

Macro-Ecology of Gulf of Mexico Cold Seeps
Annual Review of Marine Science, 2009Shortly after the discovery of chemosynthetic ecosystems at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, similar ecosystems were found at cold seeps in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the past two decades, these sites have become model systems for understanding the physiology of the symbiont-containing megafauna and the ecology of seep communities worldwide.

Sustainable energy from deep ocean cold seeps
Energy & Environmental Science, 2008Two designs of benthic microbial fuel cell (BMFC) were deployed at cold seeps in Monterey Canyon, CA, unattended for between 68 and 162 days. One design had a cylindrical solid graphite anode buried vertically in sediment, and the other had a carbon fiber brush anode semi-enclosed in a chamber above the sediment–water interface.

Methods for the Study of Cold Seep Ecosystems
2010The discovery of huge subsurface reservoirs of methane in the form of gas hydrate, has fueled the interest in the associated seep ecosystems and their role as barriers against this greenhouse gas. Technological advances in high-resolution mapping and optical imaging, as well as in situ chemical analyses of the deep seafloor have helped to reveal the ...

Neogene cold-seep microbial carbonates (Crotone Basin - South Italy)
2023For the first time, the Neogene cold seep carbonate deposits of the Crotone Basin (south Italy) are described. These deposits form a carbonate body reaching a maximum length of 350 m and a thickness 40 m and are characterized by a conduit facies made of authigenic carbonates filling the previously active gas/fluid escape pipes.
